Why do you start a rescue?

They all have a past, but now they have a future.

Our horse and large breed dog rescues have many needs
when they come to us. The most basic being, a loving place
to call home for a month, a year or perhaps a lifetime.

As is the case with many animal rescues, Hooves & Paws, Inc. does not receive any public funding. We rely entirely on the kindness of private donors to support our mission. We'd like to say, thank you to everyone that has so generously given to our rescue. Click here to see how others have helped our animals.

Genea & Chuck

UrgentWith the help of many people on the FOB Boards we raised enough money to transport Princess to Glenwood, IA. These people are incredible! They worked so hard to help us get this mare to safety. As of tonight 01/29/10, at 10:00 p.m. Princess was picked up in Kentucky by our transport and she is headed for a stay for a couple days with our transport people, New Beginnings Animal Refuge in New Salisbury, IN. Right now there is several inches of snow in Kentucky and they are calling for several more inches so we wanted to make sure she got out of Kentucky before tonight and we just made it. Thank you to everyone involved in this truly incredible save of this precious mare.

Update 01/31/10 - Princess is doing great and being spoiled by Becky & Bob at New Beginnings Animal Refuge. Becky & Bob are wonderful people. They are keeping us up to date every few hours on the progress Princess was making and we have been watching her on their incredible Web Cam since the day since arrived at their facility. Check out their website at www.nbarefuge.com and if you ever need horse transport they are the people you want to use.

We will be sharing pictures of Princess once she arrives at our Rescue Facility Monday February 1, 2010.

Urgent - Pony Missing
Notice her markings on her face
This is a picture of Little Red. She is a shy little shetland pony mare. She was rescued from neglect with another horse in the Glenwood, IA area. Little Red was in a foster home in Glenwood, IA and sadly her foster family gave her away without our knowledge September 11, 2009. On September 12, 2009 she was then given away once again to a lady named Christina or Christine that was at the Red Oak, Iowa Auction who had a (2) year old child with her. If you have seen Little Red or have any information regarding where she could possibly be please contact our rescue.  We have had some leads and we believe she is in the Glenwood, IA area or the Red Oak, Iowa area.  Please help us find Little Red.  She had had a rough start in life and our only concern at this time is to find her & bring her back to a safe environment.  We can be reached at 712-527-3721 (Rescue/Shelter) or 712-355-3721 (Genea's Cell)

Max has been Adopted
Max was found as a stray in the Malvern, IA area.  He is very thin and is in need of Vet care.  Hooves & Paws Rescue has arranged for him to get the Vet care he needs and some nice people are fostering him & feeding him lots of good food and giving him all the love possible.

Max has been adopted.  He is one of the many dogs that Hooves & Paws Rescue has been able to place while being fostered. Foster Homes are so important!  They allow us to take even more large breed dogs and horses that need a place to call home.  We want to thank all of our foster homes for the great work they do to help our rescue and the animals.

(9) Dogs Rescued From MO Back Yard Breeder

We received an e-mail about several dogs in trouble in MO.  The family that had these dogs were small time (backyard) breeders (Not Good!).  The dogs were not being fed on a regular basis is what we were told because the people simply could not afford to feed themselves and their dogs.  We are hearing this more & more each day.

We sent out a plea for help for these dogs to many of you.  Although we are totally out of room at our rescue we could not let these dogs starve to death and suffer any longer. A wonderful lady who is involved with Wheaton rescue  stepped up to the plate and has done an incredible job by helping us & contacting other rescues to help get these dogs to safe places to heal. We are very happy to report that (4) Mastiffs, (2) Shelties, (2) JRT & (1) Lab were transported and saved Saturday May 23, 2009.

We want to send a huge thank you to the following individuals & rescues. Alma & Kent from Omaha - They did the transport of all these dogs from MO.  Truly incredible!
Winding River Boarding in KC, MO - They housed some of the dogs until they were picked up by rescues.
Mastiff Hope Rescue
Linda with CARE
Colorado Sheltie Rescue
Halfway Home Shelter

I am so proud of all of these individuals for all of their hard work and dedication to save these dogs from an unknown fate.  We could not have made this happen without everyone's help.  This was a group effort and many people, rescues and boarding facilities deserve a huge thank you for their efforts.

Some of the faces of this rescue.  These are the pictures of just some of the dog's on the Owner's property. These dogs were living in a very poor environment and they were starving and had no Vet care. But now they are safe!  Thank You To All Involved!

The Little Black Dog & The New House
A True Story 03/21/09

My family bought me when I was a puppy.  They said they loved me and would always take care of me.  Saturday March 21, 2009 a person who I had never met before held me in her arms when I crossed over to Rainbow’s Bridge. She wrapped me in a blanket and sat with me on our new front porch my family was building.  Although I was in a lot of pain I did not bite her. She had tears in her eyes and said it would be ok and I would not be in pain anymore.  That sounded very nice as I had been hit by a car the day before and my family had left and put me in our new house that they were building.  They said they would be back, but when?  It took me a long time but I finally crawled under a chair and waited. I had no food or water and I could not walk anymore.  I heard them say when they left, his back must be broke or maybe his legs.  Then they said they did not have any money to take me to the Vet and shut the door on our new house.

I spent the night wondering when they would be back.  When the door opened the next day I heard a lady and a man come in with my family.  They said to my family, where is the dog?  I peeked out from under the chair.  My family finally came back.  But they did not pick me up like they use to when I was a puppy.  They just stood there.  I heard them talking to a lady who said she was from Hooves & Paws Rescue. Then a man who came with the lady from Hooves & Paws Rescue reached under the chair and lifted me up.  He handed me to the lady from Hooves & Paws Rescue and said he would be right back. He brought a needle. He said it would be over soon. He said my pelvis was broke very bad and nothing could be done at this point. I did not feel any pain when put the needle in my arm.  I just felt better.  The lady from Hooves & Paws Rescue told me that she loved me and she was sorry.  Now I know why they have places who rescue animals like me. I am glad I got to meet the lady from Hooves & Paws Rescue.

This is a true story inspired by the little black dog who we were called to help.  There are so many others like this little black dog. The people did not get the little black dog help because they told us they could not afford Vet care.  But, when we were called they said they were ok with us paying to have the little black dog put down as long as they did not have to pay for it.

In the area that this little black dog lived there is no animal control of any type.  We are called many times to help animals just like this.  Your donations allow us to continue the work we do helping animals who have no voice of their own.  Although money is always tight at the rescue we keep enough in a special fund for animals like this who need our help.

We are in desperate need of "safe houses" for rescued horses and large breed dogs.  We have many horses & large breed dogs that need a place to call home until they can be adopted into forever homes.  We get phone calls every day to place animals at our rescue.  We never want to turn any animal away.  So, if you can open you home and heart to either a horse or a large breed dog please contact us. You can help us save the life of an animal.

Please Donate to Gunner's Fund.  Gunner was a Show Horse and when he retired he was sold.  He ended ended up in the wrong hands. Gunner's life ended in the hands of his abusers. Gunner's Fund will be used to care for the abused & neglected horse's that we are able to save in his Memory.

Because of the overwhelming number of calls we are receiving each day from agency's and individuals that need to place unwanted, neglected and starved horses and large breed dogs we need to expand our Rescue Facility. We have the opportunity to buy additional land if we can raise the money to do so.  We are asking for everyone's help with this expansion. If you can make a monthly donation or a one time donation this will allow us to start expanding and help the animals that are depending on us.

I Dream – AnnaBelle’s Story

Sometimes, I still dream.  My dreams still scare me, but now I know that is all it is, a dream.  I know I am safe now and will always be safe.  But still, I dream.

My name is Annabelle. I am a 13 year old Leopard Appaloosa mare. For many years I was a brood Mare. Since I was able, I had several beautiful foals. But, I did not ever get to keep my little ones for to long.  You see, the man that owned me took my babies from me soon after I had them.  They would scream and cry when he took them.  I would try everything to help them but this man would yell at me and push me back, hit me and lock me in my stall. I would rear up and buck and kick to try and see what he was doing with my little one. I did not understand.  He did not understand.  My baby was to young to leave me.  I would cry for days wondering what happened to my baby.  I became very mean.  I was so scared and very sad.  I didn't trust anyone. I really never understood why he was mean to me.  All I know is I was very unhappy while I was with him.

I became very mad at him each time he came in to my stall, so mad I wanted to hurt him.  Each time he bred me I was very sad because I knew after my baby was born he would take my baby away from me. It hurt so bad when he did this I thought I would never recover.   I remember the last baby  I had.  I keep that little one close to my heart and deep in my memory.  One night, my little one and I were all alone resting. Our Owner came into our stall, he said nothing to us.  He never really talked to us very much, he just yelled.  This time he put a strange thing in my mouth.  I did not know what it was.  I knew it hurt and it was tight.  Then he put something on my back.  It scared me.  I did not know what he was doing.  He pulled me out of my stall.  I did not want to go and leave my baby.

I pulled back to try and get away from him.  I did not want to leave my little one.  My baby was crying for me.  What was he doing?  Where was I going?  Who was going to stay with my baby?  I became very frightened.  I tried again and again to pull away from him.  He got very angry at me and he started hitting me in my face with his fist.  Oh, it hurt so bad.  I did not care how bad it hurt though, all I cared about is my baby.  I could hear by baby yelling for me.  I could not bear it.  I got very angry.  I had to stay with my baby.  I tried again and finally broke away from him and ran back to my little one.

I turned to look to see where my Owner was and  I felt something hit me in my head.  It was terrible.  What was this man doing.  What did I do wrong.  All I wanted to do is be with my baby. He hit me over and over.  I was thinking oh God please don’t let him hurt my baby.  I thought what can I do to make him stop.  Finally he stopped hitting me.  He was yelling very loud.  I took my baby and we went in the corner of our stall.  I thought it was over.

He was coming back toward me.  He grabbed me and pulled me out of our stall.  Again, he hit me.  He pushed my baby back and slammed the stall door.  He started to get on my back.  What was he doing?  I had never been rode before.  I did not like it. I bucked and reared.  He fell off. He grabbed me again.  This time he had something in his hand.  It was a board.  He hit me over and over in the head and in the face.  The pain was unbearable.  I could not see. He hit me in my eye and it was bleeding.  This went on for what seemed like forever.  Then he stopped.

I ran to my stall to see if my baby was okay.  My little one was in the corner hiding.  I told my baby Mommy was okay, are you okay?  I was dizzy.  My head hurt so bad, and I couldn't see out of my eye.  I stood quietly guarding my baby.  Please, don't come back.  For days after that my Owner would try and ride me again and again.  I could not bear the pain in my head and my eye.  I would rear and buck and he would hit me with a whip.  I did not think this pain would ever end.  He beat me before he got on me and when he would fall off he would beat me again.  Then one day as he came into our stall I thought he was going to try and ride me again but instead he pushed me back and put a rope on my little ones neck.  Oh please, take me I will let you ride me.  Don’t hurt my baby. As our stall door slammed shut I knew what was happening.  Another sweet baby of mine was gone, forever.

I am not with that man anymore. I live at a place they call a horse rescue.   But, I still have this dream and the others here say they dream to.  But we know now it is just a dream.  When we wake up now we see our new Owner’s walking toward us. They smile at us and hug us each morning and tell us how happy they are to have us here. We are all rescues here and we all have a past but more important now we have a future because we are at Hooves & Paws Rescue.
